Default Can an old employer hold you responsible for

incorrect refunds put on your credit account, w/out your consent? Someone at my old work, refunded my credit card when they shouldn't have. I do all banking online, so I really didn't even know. Out of nowhere, I got a phone call from my former employer basically accusing me of having something to do with these fraudulent charges, and demanding that I repay the amount in question. They had already charged back a good part of the amount on to my credit card without my consent or knowledge, and would have charged the remaining amount back, had it not been for the fact that I used my card at the doctor's to pay for some medical expenses - and now the card is at it's limit. They know about the charges I made at my doctor (how they could get that information I do not know), and are demanding I pay the balance now. Can they legally place these refunds and charges onto my account without my knowledge or consent? Can they hold me accountable for errors that they made? How can they have known about the charges I made to my account at other businesses?
It was my own personal credit card, not a company issued one. Sorry for that confusion.
I have no problem repaying what I owe. My issue is with them demanding it now, and with them threatening legal action. I do not have direct deposit, so I am not sure how they could have known about the other charges. My only idea, is that they called my credit card company and pretended to be, since they did know my ssn and credit card number.

You have to repay it, even if it wasn't your fault.

Yes, they can legally place these refunds and charges. It's their credit card, not yours. That's why you NEVER use a work credit card for personal expenses.

If this is a lot of money you are talking about, you should contact an attorney. If it is a small amount, I would call your accounting / personnel department and discuss the situation.
I would try to work it out with them first. I have no idea how they can access your account, probably since you may have direct deposit they can do this. Your bank can halt this accessing by them.

You are responsible for the money. You received money that was not yours. However, if I understand that this is your credit card, and they put charges back on without your consent, I believe that you have some recourse that they would have to put it back on and make arrangements for you to pay back for their mistake. To demand it immediately is not going to hold, either. They would have to give you consideration in repaying. If they have cost you any damages due to putting the charges on your card, you may also be able to recoup that because they did not have the right to put it there.

As for how they knew about the medical, I think you may also have some issue with them here, as well as your credit card company I would demand to know how they knew, and pursue that. They have no right to that information.

If you're looking for a job in the finance industry, then it's important to understand insurance and how it - along with other things - contributes to healthy saving accounts balances. Whether you're looking for breakdown cover or wanting to compare home insurance, insurance is one of those things that - when it comes to an accident or something similar - will prevent you from having to scout the market for the best loans to pay off repair/accident fees.
