What is the appropriate way to ask a government worker
where they work at? If i want to know where they work do i ask "What is your company's name?" or "What is your government company's name?" Please give me an examplethanks for your answers. Do any Americans know if Huckstar's answer would be the same for the U.S. "What ministry do you work for?"

"Hi Bob, what Department do you work for?"The United States government is divided up into Departments, i.e. Department of Defense, Department of State, Department of the Interior etc. Hence my answer.
First you may ask "What type of work do you do?" If they say "engineer' or "clerical" you may then ask "Oh, who are you with?"If they just say "the government" let it drop. Most people are forthcoming as to which department.
In Canada you would pose the question as, "What ministry do you work with?" If you wanted more specific information you could follow up with, "What department?"Example answer: "I work with Statistics Canada in Small Business and Special Surveys."
